Setup Email - Outlook Express

Setting Up Outlook Express in Windows XP

Please Note: This setup guide has been created using Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP.
However, it should be fairly accurate for Windows 2000 as well.
It also assumes you have Outlook Express installed.

Step 1: Open Outlook Express

Launch Outlook Express. This is normally located under the START and Programs menus.
Once launched you should see something like this:

Step 2: Add an Email Account

Go to the TOOLS menu at the top of the window, and select the Accounts menu option:

Once the Internet Accounts menu has opened, click the Add button, then select the Mail... option:

You have just started the Internet Connection Wizard. First type in your name and click the Next button:

Type in your Email Address (all lower case, no spaces) and click the Next button:

Make sure that POP3 is selected from the first pull-down list, then fill in your Incoming Mail Server (POP3)
into the next field and your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) other fields provided.
These might look like: mail.yourisp.co.nz and.or smtp.yourisp.co.nz

Make sure that your options look the same as the picture below then click Next:

Type in your Account Name and Password into the two fields provided, then click Next.
Check the Remember Password box if you would like to save your email password from here on.
(This is normally checked by default)

Click the Finish button.

Step 3: Optimise Your Account Settings

Go to the TOOLS menu (again) at the top of the window, and select the Accounts menu option:

You will now see the Mail Account that we have set up. Select it by clicking on the Account Name ONCE.
This Account Name, will most likly be the Incoming Mail Server (POP3), that you filled in in Step 2.
It should be now hi-lighted. Now click the Properties button to the right:

You should now be viewing the Mail Account Properties.
Replace the highlighted field with your Email Address.
You can also put in your Company Name if applicable:

Now select the Servers tab from the top of the window:

Click the My server requires authentication checkbox, then click the Settings button to the right:

Make sure that the Use same settings as my incoming mail server option is checked:

Click the OK button on the Account Settings window too:

CONGRATULATIONS! Outlook Express is now setup.

Step 4: Checking Your Email

Click the Send/Recv button. Note you will need to be connected to the Internet to do this.
